Rome fits contemporary sensibilities of high production values, fast-paced scenes, foul language, over-the-top violence, and very good-looking people. That said, I was totally mesmerized by Rome.
I, Claudius is pure drama in the British tradition that relies on performance and writing rather than any superficial elements. After watching the grandeur of Rome, it was harder to watch the cramped BBC studio sets, but I, Claudius evoked so much sadness in me. Rome was sensational but didn't exactly go for substance that appealed to the heart and mind at all times. The writing of Rome was sometimes uneven, rushed, and too excessive. I, Claudius' writing had perfect form, an intriguing beginning and a dignified, though pessimistic ending.
Both series are superb and superior to 99.99% of films/shows out there. So watch them both.
